Overall objectives

Uptake of circular economy in the agri-food sector and policies of Vietnam leads to equitable economic growth decoupled from harmful environmental impacts.

Specific objectives

1) The cocoa and chocolate subsector transition to and circular economy approaches at key points in the product lifecycle (Indicator: Number of cocoa or chocolate companies that have shifted to circular economy approaches in both their cocoa supply chains and their processing and packaging).

2) Change in the cocoa sub-sector is leveraged to trigger uptake of circular economy approaches in the wider agri-food sector. (Indicators: Number of agri-food companies applying new circular economy approaches to products other than cocoa/chocolate; Amount of public and private investments allocated for the transformation from conventional to circular economy approach; Number of policies designed to support the implementation of circular economic models.

Brief summary/description

The programme falls within the Priority area 1 “Climate-responsive digital circular economy” of the EU - Vietnam Multiannual Indicative Programme 2021-2027 (MIP). The action contributes to the MIP's specific objectives “Strengthened resilience to climate related hazards and natural disasters”.

Expected results

1) Cocoa producers and supporting businesses increase productivity and reduce environmental impacts through integrated, regenerative and closed-loop production and improved trading and fermentation. 

2) Cocoa and chocolate processors decrease environmental impacts through reduced energy and water intensity, low-carbon energy, bio-based packaging and management enabled by digitalized traceability systems.

3) Cocoa provides a reproducible model for uptake of circular economy in the Vietnamese agri-food sector and in agri-food policies.
