Thanks to its 27 Member States, the European Union is one of the richest place on the earth in terms of variety of culture, gastronomy, languages, nature etc. It also offers a wide range of high-level universities and study programmes.

VISA

The Schengen States are not immigration countries. Foreign nationals visiting a Schengen State can be divided into three categories: those who do not need a visa, those wishing to visit the Schengen States for a short period not exceeding 3 months, and others wishing to stay for a longer period than 3 months. Holders of a Vietnamese passport require a visa for the "Schengen States". Other nationals may require a visa and should inquire at the Embassy of the Schengen States.

For “General presentation on EU visa policy” please click here

Information on short-stay visa (up to 3 months)

On 26 March 1995, the SCHENGEN visa was introduced. The SCHENGEN visa is now valid for the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. A SCHENGEN visa issued by an Embassy or Consulate of one of the SCHENGEN countries allows the holder to travel freely in these countries.

However, please note that a holder of a SCHENGEN visa is still subject to immigration control and is not guaranteed entry into any of the SCHENGEN countries; a visa is not in itself a right to enter a country.  See also the specific country information

The total duration of stay, whether one or several visits, may not exceed three months within half a year and the visitor must leave the Schengen countries before the expiring date of the visa.

Where to apply for a SCHENGEN visa?

  • If visiting only one of the SCHENGEN countries, an application should be handed in at the Embassy or Consulate of that country.
  • If visiting several SCHENGEN countries, an application should be handed in at the Embassy or Consulate of the country in which your main destination will be.
  • If visiting several SCHENGEN countries without having a main destination, an application should be handed in at the Embassy or Consulate of the first SCHENGEN country on your travel itinerary for which a visa is required.

Which documents must be submitted before individual visa applications can be considered?

For all applicants the following general requirements apply, regardless of the purpose of visit:

  • As of January 1st, 2007, all Schengen states have raised the visa fees to 60 Euros. Please inquire in the respective Embassy in which currency the fee has to be paid.

Study

What are the benefits of studying in Europe?

Choice and academic mobility: there are over 1,300 institutions offering high-quality study programs in an international environment and a variety of course options and internship opportunities for you to choose.

Research and Innovation: Europe has a worldwide reputation as a center of excellence for education and beyond that, it is also a hotbed of research and innovation, home to first-class resources and top scientists. This can be important for the next steps in your professional life.

Affordability: in the current top 10 of "Most affordable cities for students", the majority are in European countries: Austria, France, Germany, Poland and Spain. Studying in Europe is generally quite affordable, as tuition fees are very low compared to the top-quality education that you will receive.

Travel: Once you are in the Schengen area you will be able to travel all over the continent and discover the beauty of Europe.

Language learning: Most students study in English: outside of class, there are also opportunities to pick up a new language: a major advantage on the labor market.

Working: In Europe, students have the right to work at least 15 hours a week. With the new visa rules (in effect since May 2018), students and researchers are allowed to stay at least 9 months in Europe after finishing their studies or research in order to look for a job or to set up a business. This can be valuable on a CV.

Erasmus+

Cooperation on education has gradually become an important instrument for the implementation of EU external policies. These are key tools for promoting inter-cultural understanding and connections between our regions, knowledge transfer and sustainable development. Exchange programmes for higher education help people to connect worldwide, reaching out to a large number of stakeholders, which help to promote a positive image of Europe in the world.

Higher Education is the responsibility of the 27 EU Member States. The role of the EU is to promote Europe as a centre of excellence for higher education.

The Erasmus+ 2021-2027 is the European Union’s programme to support projects, partnerships, events and mobility in the areas of education, training, youth and sport. Opportunities in the higher education sector are open to Vietnam. To learn more about the opportunities it can offer to organisations and individuals from outside the EU, please visit this page.

The Erasmus+ 2021-2027 programme places a strong focus on social inclusion, green and digital transitions, and on promoting young people’s participation in democratic life. There are three main types of opportunities for funding, or Key Actions:

Key Action 1 supports transnational mobility activities targeting learners (students, trainees, apprentices, young people and volunteers) and staff (professors, teachers, trainers, youth workers, and people working in organisations active in the education, training and youth fields). Individual mobility must take place through organisations involved in a mobility project.

This Key Action supports mainly partnership projects between organisations from different countries, which are expected to bring positive and long-lasting effects to the participating organisations, to the policy systems in which such projects are framed, as well as to organisations and persons directly or indirectly involved in the activities.

Support is provided to different types of partnerships, which are expected to result in the development, transfer and/or implementation of innovative practices at organisational, local, regional, national or European levels. This Key Action also includes Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, which provide integrated degree programmes, with two-year EU-funded scholarships for both EU and non-EU students.

Activities in support of policy reform aim at achieving the goals of the European policy agendas. Funding is available for projects in support of policy reform in the education, training and youth fields implemented directly by the European Commission or through specific calls for proposals managed by the Executive Agency. This Key Action targets European applicants, but Vietnamese organisations can participate as partners.

Erasmus+ supports additional type of Action: Jean Monnet Actions which provide funding for initiatives related to promoting excellence in teaching and research in the field of EU studies. Funding is available worldwide. Eligible projects include, for example, establishing a short teaching program or course in the field of EU studies at a higher education institution, establishing a teaching post specialising on the EU (Jean Monnet Chair), or establishing a focal point of competence and knowledge on EU subjects (Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence).

Organisations and institutions seeking funding opportunities supported by the programme must comply with the conditions for participation and funding expressed in Programme Guide

Study in Europe

The EU Delegation to Vietnam has promoted studying in Europe via the organisation of the "Study in Europe" Education Fairs since 2016. The annual events, taking place in September, enjoyed large press coverage and have attracted over 10,000 visitors, mostly students and their parents, and also members of the academia.

The European Commission's official study portal "STUDY IN EUROPE" provides useful, comprehensive information about studying in each of the European Union countries.
