UN Secretary-General's visit to Papua New Guinea

The European Union, an active supporter of multilateralism, acknowledges Papua New Guinea on the occasion of the historic 4-day visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres from September 2-5. In Papua New Guinea, the European Union Delegation and United Nations cooperate closely to promote Sustainable Development Goals, peace and human rights. Several EU-funded projects are implemented by UN agencies. Many of these efforts are realized through EU-funded initiatives managed by UN agencies.

A key example of this collaboration is the EU-STREIT programme, a significant EU-funded initiative with a budget of 340 million kina. Since its inception in 2020, the programme has been active in the East and West Sepik regions, implemented by UN agencies such as FAO, ILO, ITU, UNCDF, and UNDP. Its focus is on fostering sustainable agricultural value-chains for cocoa, vanilla, and fisheries in local communities. The programme ensures that these high-quality products reach international markets, thereby enhancing local livelihoods.

The visit of the UN Secretary-General to the Sepik region underlines the close cooperation between the European Union, United Nations, and national authorities as they work towards shared goals and objectives. This partnership not only highlights the commitment of the EU and UN to the region's development but also strengthens the ties that promote common interests and shared goals.
