EU support to the Papua New Guinea National WaSH Policy (Second phase of EU-Unicef Partnership in Papua New Guinea)

The European Union ‘Support to the Papua New Guinea National WASH Policy 2015-2030 Part 2 (Klinpela Banz Komuniti Projek) supports Papua New Guinea’s goals and will contribute to the achievement of SDG 6 “Access to clean water and sanitation” for its people. The programme will contribute to improving the quality of life and health of the urban population in PNG through increased equitable access to safe, convenient and sustainable water supply and sanitation and improved hygiene practices; as well as long-term hygiene behaviour change at the personal, household, community and institutional levels particular to urban areas that are currently under-served.

  • Implementing partners: The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) (EUR 9.85 million).

OBJECTIVES

  1. Improved equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water in selected urban areas, focusing on vulnerable groups and locations of higher human concentration (schools, healthcare facilities, markets).
  2. Improved adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene in selected urban areas, with a special focus on locations of higher human concentrations (schools, healthcare facilities, markets) and paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations, including improved nutrition for children in schools.

KEY EXPECTED RESULTS

  • Improved equitable access to safe and sustainable drinking water and sanitation services in community facilities, targeting schools, healthcare facilities/hospitals and local marketplaces in targeted urban areas;
  • Sustained use of safe water and sanitation services and adoption of improved hygiene practices among people living in targeted urban areas at personal, household, community and institutional levels, including people affected by humanitarian situations (i.e. COVID-19);

MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Installed potable water supply system(s) with treatment and metered reticulation in schools. Healthcare facilities (urban clinics) and local markets,
  • Urban water supply system plans developed in targeted towns,
  • Centralized water supply systems - Asset management sustained in targeted urban areas,
  • Plans for the sustainable operation of centralised potable water supply systems on a user-pays basis drafted in targeted urban areas,
  • Sanitation infrastructure is refurbished/upgraded in schools, healthcare facilities/urban clinics and local community markets,
  • Targeted behaviour change communication to promote improved hygiene as well as proper use of the new infrastructure in the targeted schools, healthcare facilities and communities, and
  • Initiatives to eliminate open defecation in the selected project towns.
