Green Diplomacy Week 2025 - Strengthening partnerships for a sustainable future

03/10/2025 – Port Moresby, PNG – The European Union Delegation to Papua New Guinea, in collaboration with its Forestry, Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme (EU-FCCB), is hosting its Green Diplomacy Week from October 6-10 in Port Moresby. This event, organised annually across EU delegations in the world, aims to bring together various local stakeholders for dialogue and partnerships, to promote discussions on global environmental and climate issues.

This year, in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, we align ourselves with the international community to highlight the significant advancements achieved in climate action. As the global community transitions towards a net-zero economy, this year's Green Diplomacy Week reaffirms the dedication to accelerate this transition, thereby ensuring sustainable and inclusive development for all.

The European Union demonstrates its commitment to climate objectives through the European Green Deal, striving to create a fair and prosperous carbon-neutral economy by 2050. Europe continues to lead with the Clean Industrial Deal, effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions while fostering competitive industries and job growth. As PNG advances its energy sector, focusing on renewable energy adoption remains critical. By aligning with global decarbonisation efforts, PNG can benefit from the EU's experiences in carbon reduction and renewable innovations, enriching its policy development, energy security, and economic growth.

The European Union and Papua New Guinea cooperate closely on these issues, notably through the on-going 220 million kina 'Forestry, Climate Change, and Biodiversity Programme' (EU-FCCB). We are also working on major investments under the Global Gateway strategy, such as the renovation and greening of Rabaul Port or the “PNG Water Plan” for adequate and efficient water supply.

The 2025 Green Diplomacy Week in PNG features a series of awareness-raising activities in various locations in Port Moresby providing a platform for youth, civil society and government agencies to discuss their role in climate action.

A series of documentaries and short films related to climate change will be screened at the Moresby Arts Theatre (MAT), each followed by an open discussion among youth and participants. This segment together with a “Youth Talk” aims to inspire and deepen understanding among attendees. Visibility will also be given to different Government agencies through the launch of new websites. Civil society will be brought to the fore – notably through the launch of the strategy of the PNG Environmental Alliance, and Civil Society Dialogue.
