From Natural Flow to Sustainable Energy: Dế Mèn Du Ký's Journey at Ialy Hydropower Plant

As part of the “Plug in to Evolution” campaign, travel vlogger Dế Mèn Du Ký returns to Gia Lai - home to the Central Highlands’ distinctive landscape of rolling hills, river systems, and rich vegetation. At the heart of this ecosystem is the Sê San River, which plays a vital role in sustaining biodiversity and providing water for the region.

Situated along this river, the Ialy Hydropower Plant is key to harnessing and regulating water resources for energy production. The reservoir behind the dam not only helps manage water flow but also creates a striking landscape amid the highland forests, where natural elements and infrastructure coexist.

Following Dế Mèn's journey, one of Ialy’s most remarkable features is its largely underground structure. A complex network of tunnels channels water from the Sê San River through turbines to generate electricity. Much of this process takes place beneath the surface, forming an operational space that is largely hidden from the surrounding landscape.

Since 2018, the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion – Phase 2 has been implemented to enhance capacity and operational efficiency. Led by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the project is supported by international partners, including the European Union, which provides grant funding and technical assistance.

Beyond increasing power output, the expansion also focuses on aligning operations with international standards in efficiency, safety, and environmental management. At the same time, Vietnamese engineers have gained access to international expertise in underground construction and modern power system operations.

The journey to Ialy highlights how a natural flow can be integrated into energy infrastructure. Water is not only a resource, but an active part of the production process when managed and operated sustainably.

In this process, the European Union’s support contributes to strengthening technical capacity, advancing the energy transition, and fostering a more sustainable energy system in Vietnam.
