Welcoming Address of the Ambassador of the European Union to Turkmenistan on the Occasion of Europe Day 2025

Distinguished guests, dear friends, hoş geldiňiz

It is a true pleasure to welcome you all this evening as we gather to celebrate Europe Day.

Today, under somewhat unexpected Turkmen skies, we celebrate the visionary spirit of Robert Schuman, whose declaration 75 years ago laid the very foundation for the European Union we know today. His vision was not merely about rebuilding from the ashes of war; it was a profound roadmap for lasting peace, shared prosperity, and deep integration. Schuman and his counterparts understood that peace and European unity are inseparable, requiring not just a ceasefire or a cold peace, but a genuine and comprehensive peace underpinned by shared prosperity and a commitment to working together.

Today, that very vision of peace faces its gravest challenge in a generation. As we celebrate the remarkable achievements of European integration and the enduring pursuit of unity, we cannot ignore the stark reality that peace on our continent is once again under threat. The brutal and illegal war of aggression waged by Russia against Ukraine has brought conflict back to our European continent. This aggression is a stark violation of the rules-based international order that the European Union strives to uphold.

We stand firmly with Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are unwavering in our support until Ukraine achieves a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace – the very kind of peace we have striven to build within the European Union for the past three-quarters of a century.

The vision of Robert Schuman extended far beyond the borders of Europe. His opening words: "World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it," resonate deeply even today. The European Union remains committed to making these creative efforts, not only within our own borders but also in strengthening our global partnerships. This includes fostering robust cooperation with our partners in Central Asia.

We deeply value our relationship with the countries of Central Asia, a region of immense strategic importance and rich cultural heritage. Our cooperation is built on mutual respect, shared interests, and a commitment to addressing common challenges. From strengthening connectivity and promoting sustainable development to enhancing security and fostering people-to-people exchanges, the European Union is a reliable and steadfast partner for Central Asia.

This year alone has seen significant milestones in our engagement, including the EU-Central Asia Ministerial Meeting held right here in Ashgabat and the EU-Central Asia Summit in Samarkand. Both meetings provided a vital platform for leaders to discuss regional challenges and opportunities, but also pledging concrete commitments towards sustainable development, connectivity, and regional security. These engagements underscore the EU's belief in the potential of this region and our dedication to working together for mutual benefit and a stable, prosperous future.

Our partnership with Turkmenistan holds a special place within this broader regional context. We recognise Turkmenistan's unique role and its commitment to regional stability. The European Union is actively engaged in strengthening our cooperation with Turkmenistan, focusing on all areas from good governance, the rule of law and human rights, economic diversification, trade, energy to fight against climate change and environmental sustainability. Through initiatives like our ongoing projects in green energy and climate action or support for WTO membership, we aim to support Turkmenistan's sustainable development path and build a stronger, more resilient future together.

Dear guests,

Tonight, as we celebrate Europe Day, we also celebrate the spirit of partnership and friendship and the richness and diversity of both European and Turkmen cultures.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our counterparts from various ministries, national agencies, and civil society of Turkmenistan, for joining us tonight. Your presence underscores the spirit of collaboration that is so vital to our shared goals. Sag boluň.

I am happy also to see our partners from international organisations and diplomatic core. And I would specially like to welcome a group of young diplomats from all 5 Central Asian countries who underwent the training in Ashgabat under the auspices of the United Nations and may now further train during the diplomatic reception.

I also want to express my deepest gratitude to all the sponsors whose support brought extra colour and joy to our celebration in the spirit of unity in diversity: BOMCA, Design Lab, the Embassy of France, and the Embassy of Germany in Turkmenistan. Your contributions are as always truly appreciated.

Dear Friends,

The anthem of the European Union, the “Ode to Joy,” which we had heard earlier, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of unity. As we celebrate Europe Day, let us not only celebrate the historic achievements of European citizens but also reaffirm our commitment to peace, cooperation, and a rules-based international order. Let us continue to work together, with creativity and determination, to address the challenges of our time and build a more secure and prosperous future for all.

Let us raise a glass to the enduring spirit of Europe Day, to the strength of our partnership, and to a future of peace, cooperation, and mutual prosperity. Ýewropa güni gutly bolsun! Enjoy the evening!
