Federica Mogherini speaks about the Middle East peace process with foreign ministers of Norway and of Jordan

Text

Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, spoke today on the phone with foreign ministers of Norway, Ine Eriksen Søreide, and of Jordan, Ayman Al Safadi, as part of their ongoing engagement to support the resumption of the Middle East peace process towards a negotiated two-state solution, the only realistic solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

In the calls of the High Representative with the ministers, they discussed the latest developments on the ground as well as the next steps in the engagement for peace. Norway as a chair of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC) for Palestine is an important partner for the EU. Jordan plays a special role, as the King of Jordan is the custodian of the HolySites in Jerusalem.

Following the December decision by the US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the European Union reaffirmed its clear support to the two-state solution with Jerusalem as the capital of both and announced an increased engagement with the parties and with regional and international partners in support of the resumption of direct negotiations.
