Japan is one of the EU's strategic partners, sharing such values as democracy, the rule of law, open markets and respect for human rights. We cooperate on a wide range of issues ranging from peace-building and anti-piracy missions to science and innovation.

With so much to gain, I sincerely believe the EU and Japan can both benefit from a closer partnership on all fronts, where we jointly tackle such global challenges as climate change, energy security, terrorism, and development. Many of our citizens already live, study and work in each other's countries, and benefit from this close relationship on a personal level.
