Over 7 000 Ukrainians trained by Spanish military trainers

The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA) in Spain has trained more than 7,000 Ukrainian military personnel since November 2022.
To date, 152 modules have been delivered in more than 30 different specializations. The courses, organized to complement the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, have been extremely diverse: from Basic Recruit (basic combat training courses) to more specific courses such as Close Air Support (CAS), taught by the Spanish Air and Space Force in Cartagena, or the production of geospatial information - Vector Geospatial Data TM - conducted in Madrid.
At the end of 2024, training in International Humanitarian law began for the first time for Ukrainian military personnel. This course is taught by the Military Legal Corps and the Military Health Corps at the Military School of Legal Studies of the Central Defense Academy (Madrid). Also noteworthy are the counter-terrorism modules offered by the Guardia Civil and the maritime mine clearance and maritime interdiction modules conducted by the Navy.
Three years after the start of the conflict, the EUMAM-UA operation in Spain reaches this milestone, which demonstrates the constant commitment of the European Union to the defense and sovereignty of Ukraine.
EUMAM UA, support to Ukraine
The EU Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) was approved by Council Decision on 17 October 2022. It aims to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by Russia and other potential aggressors. EUMAM works closely with all other international akin partners to provide training support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Likewise, the EUMAM is also open to participation by third States. All mission activities are carried out on EU soil. So far, 24 EU Member States have offered training modules and personnel to the Ukrainian Army.
In Spain, training activities are managed by the Toledo Training Coordination Centre (TTCC). Since the beginning of this European mission, Spain has broadened the format of the courses, which are now being conducted in different units of the Spanish Armed Forces.
The TTCC consists of a Headquarters in Burgos, responsible for the Combat Training Unit in Toledo which is permanent and carries out both basic training and specific courses and the Training Modules (TM), which are activated to provide instruction in the requested specialties. These courses are held in the facilities that the Army and the Navy have in various locations throughout Spain.
The Spanish Armed Forces have extensive experience in training personnel from the Armed Forces and security forces of other countries, such as Iraq, Mali and Somalia, among others.
