EU Delegation to Ethiopia participated on the Green Legacy Event

EU participation to the Green Legacy Event on Aug 23, 2020 at EU Delegation to Ethiopia premises
On 5 June 2020, Ethiopian Prime Minster Abiy Ahmed launched the Second Green Legacy Campaign. The Green Legacy initiative is critical to Ethiopia’s aspirations to build a green and climate-resilient economy and has been linked to the World Environment Day, which also took place on the 5th of June.
The Government of Ethiopia planted 5 billion seedlings in the Green Legacy campaign this year. This year’s campaign is part of the Government’s plan for planting 20 billion seedlings over four years.
In the country’s capital, Addis Ababa, 7 million seedlings were planted and the example was provided not only by the city’s mayor but also by top religious leaders. The Forestry Commission has reported that nearly 100% of all seedlings had been planted on time for this campaign, which is a tremendous success.
The European Union Delegation in Ethiopia was happy to take part in tree planting action to curb the effects of deforestation and climate change in support of the Green Legacy Initiative by holding an event and, with the help of the Forestry Commissioner, has planted about 20 indigenous tree seedlings in its gardens. The Green Legacy Initiative has to contribute to Ethiopia’s environmental restoration and conservation efforts and is aligned with the priorities of the Government of Ethiopia’s (GoE) national development plan and strategy.
