FAO launches EU-funded laboratory training to strengthen hazardous chemicals monitoring in Uzbekistan

22 June 2026 – The project "Technical Assistance for the Sound Management of Hazardous Chemicals”, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with funding from the European Union, has launched today a four-day training programme on laboratory quality management and risk assessment for specialists from the National Center on Environmental Monitoring.

The training, delivered by international laboratory specialist Mohammad Nazem Shirazi, is the first in a series of four capacity development modules aimed at strengthening national laboratory capacities in chemical analysis and pesticide residue testing.

The training addresses two main areas: risk identification and assessment in chemical analysis laboratories, and quality management systems and accreditation readiness in line with ISO/IEC 17025:2017, the internationally recognized standard for testing and calibration laboratory competence.

Combining technical presentations with practical exercises and real-life examples, the training will support participants in strengthening their knowledge and skills in laboratory risk management, the application of quality control tools, and preparation for accreditation processes. It will also enhance awareness of occupational and operational hazards associated with chemicals, laboratory equipment, waste handling, ventilation systems and emergency situations, alongside measures to maintain a safe and effective laboratory environment.

Effective laboratory systems are a key component of the sound management of hazardous chemicals. They enable competent authorities to monitor pesticide residues, assess risks of contamination, and support evidence-based decision-making to protect human health and the environment.

This activity forms part of FAO’s wider assistance to Uzbekistan in strengthening national capacities for food safety, sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Through the project, the European Union is supporting targeted technical assistance to improve hazardous chemicals management and reinforce systems for environmental monitoring and pesticide control.

Background

The project “Technical Assistance for the Sound Management of Hazardous Chemicals” (GCP/UZB/017), funded by the European Union and implemented by FAO, is a EUR 3.9 million initiative that contributes to reducing environmental degradation in Uzbekistan through improved pesticide management and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

The project is part of broader European Union support to the Government of Uzbekistan to strengthen food safety, promote sustainable and efficient land and water use, and foster inclusive agricultural value chains.
