EU ‘painted’ Skopje Transport Centre with messages for eco-mobility and healthy lifestyle

30.09.2020

The EU Delegation lent a hand to the City of Skopje in turning a corner of its transport centre into an urban bike-parking, thus responding to the needs of a constantly growing number of cyclists, especially in the current Covid-19 circumstances. The mural funded by the EU gives a special urban vibe to the spot and sends out a message about better mobility, sports activity and healthy lifestyle.

Veloshtad (a coin from velosiped = bicycle and ploshtad = square) is the name of the bike-parking inaugurated on 29 September within the Skopje Transport Centre. This spot aims to meet the practical needs of bikers, mainly in terms of parking and servicing, as they frequent the Centre, which incorporates Skopje’s railway and main bus station.

The inauguration of Veloshtad replaced the marking of Car Free Day after the traditional bike parade could not take place this year due to Covid-19. The event united European Mobility Week and European Week of Sports, whose slogans this year are ‘Zero-emission mobility for all’ and ‘Be Active’.

The EU Delegation gave the finishing touch to the project (supported by the German Agency for International Cooperation - GIZ), by financing a mural, a work of three graduated artists: Sanja Simoska, Sali Ertunc and Brankica Jordankovska.

Ambassador David Geer stated that the mural is only a small part of the otherwise considerable assistance that the EU is providing to North Macedonia in the area of environment.

‘Cycling and walking are simple, practical ways that can help us stay healthy and fit as well as making a contribution in achieving the EU’s ambitious target of a carbon-neutral continent by 2050. The number of cyclists in Skopje has grown impressively during corona times. But some parts of the city are still lacking proper infrastructure. I share the hope of Skopje cyclists that this will change soon’, said the Ambassador.
