What we do

The role of the European Union Delegation to Venezuela

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Venezuela was established in 1977 as the first Delegation on the South American continent. From that moment on, relations between Europe and South America were strengthened, allowing the consecutive opening of Delegations in almost all the countries of the region.

The competences and mandate of the EU Delegation to Venezuela

  • To represent the EU before Venezuelan authorities.
  • To coordinate with the Embassies of the EU’s Member States in Venezuela.
  • To cooperate with Venezuelan public entities and civil society organisations.
  • To promote political and economic relations between Venezuela and the EU, as well as EU values and interests.
  • To inform the Venezuelan public about the development of the EU, and to carry out cultural, press, and public diplomacy activities.
  • To oversee the monitoring of bilateral relations in the areas of politics, economy, trade and cooperation.
  • To provide direct humanitarian aid through European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, better known as ECHO office on the ground.

Who we are

The European Union is a supranational organisation of 27 countries with economic and political aims. The European Union covers a large part of the European continent. The distinct feature of the EU is that, although all Member States are sovereign and independent countries, they work together with the Community institutions for peace and prosperity, while benefiting from the continent's great diversity of cultures, traditions and languages. For all these reasons, since 2000 the motto of the European Union is "United in Diversity".

The Delegation

With the creation of the European External Action Service (EEAS), introduced by the Treaty of Lisbon, the European Union seeks to make its external action more coherent and effective and to achieve greater influence beyond its borders.

Within this framework, the Delegation of the European Union to Venezuela is constituted as a diplomatic mission that assumes the external representation of the European Union and is part of a network of 141 delegations around the world that function in a similar way to any other embassy accredited in a country.

The EU has one of the largest diplomatic services in the world. The EEAS is headed by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission (HR/VP), Josep Borrell. The headquarters of the EEAS is located in Brussels.
