The European Union with its Member States, Switzerland and Liechtenstein have strong human, social and economic ties. We share geography, history, languages and values. We defend these values together at an international level, where we often work together for causes such as climate change mitigation, the fight against pandemics, or the promotion of human rights and democracy.

The coronavirus crisis has made us aware that we are a community of destiny. The close ties between Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the EU are visible and perceptible on a daily basis, for example through the many cross-border commuters working in the health sector, in the supply of medical products or the integrated production chains of our industries. The experience during the lockdown reminded us of the importance of the free movement of goods and people in Europe. This economic and social interdependence is explained by Switzerland's and Liechtenstein's direct access to the EU single market, made possible by the European Economic Area (EEA) and the "bilateral agreements," respectively. The absence of trade barriers and the free movement of persons are important sources of prosperity for our citizens.

My task as ambassador is to work for the further deepening of these good relations. I, therefore, maintain contact with the authorities, political forces and representatives of business and trade unions in my two host countries, but I also actively seek exchanges with the media and citizens, for instance at lectures or school visits.
