Statement by the Spokesperson on the decision of the Montenegro Parliament on the temporary parliament committee on comprehensive reform of electoral and other legislation

Text

The decision taken yesterday by the Parliament of Montenegro extending and broadening the mandate of the parliamentary committee on comprehensive reform of electoral and other legislation is an important step towards re-establishing political dialogue in the parliament and an inclusive reform of the electoral legislation. We look forward to the swift appointment of two new opposition members to the committee.

The European Union will continue to assist Montenegro in addressing the challenges identified in the European Commission's latest report on Montenegro, including restoring the independence of the public broadcaster Council; tackling challenges related to the work of the State Electoral Commission and the Anti-Corruption Agency; and delivering a comprehensive and timely electoral reform. This should pave the way to increasing citizens’ trust in the conduct of the next parliamentary elections and ensuring that election results are accepted by all political parties.

The EU stands ready to help and looks forward to the active and constructive participation of all political parties in the temporary committee with a view to bringing Montenegro closer to the European Union.
