Statement by the Spokesperson on the situation in the Comoros

30.03.2019
Text

‘In recent days, the Comoros have been the scene of serious political tensions and acts of violence causing loss of human life. This is in the wake of the elections held on 24 March, which, according to the Joint Declaration of the international election observation missions, were marred by significant irregularities, calling into question the transparency and credibility of the elections.

In view of the situation, it is important that the Comorian authorities and all political actors demonstrate restraint and refrain from violence. The security forces must act in accordance with the principles of the rule of law and with full respect for human rights.

The EU supports the call of the African Union for an inclusive dialogue to be established rapidly with a view to finding a consensus-based solution to the crisis, preserving the democratic achievements and the stability of the archipelago.

It will continue to monitor the situation closely in coordination with its regional and international partners.’
