Text

The Heads of Mission of the European Union Delegation and EU Member States accredited to Myanmar issue the following statement:

The escalation of violence in Rakhine State must stop immediately. The EU deplores the attack by the Arakan Army (AA) on several police posts in Rakhine State, and deeply regrets the loss of lives. We call for restraint and urge all sides to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians.

The deep-rooted historical grievances in Rakhine State can only be solved through dialogue and an inclusive political process.  The EU welcomes the Myanmar military's unilaterally declared ceasefire in many of the conflict areas in the North and East of Myanmar and expresses the hope that it can be extended beyond four months and include Rakhine State. This could create the necessary momentum to put an end to decades of conflict, and finally achieve a nation-wide peace agreement based on a shared vision that respects and protects the rights of all people of Myanmar.

The EU reaffirms its continued strong support for Myanmar's democratic transition, peace and national reconciliation process and inclusive socio-economic development.
