CSOs partnering to mitigate tobacco-related health risks for women and children in Yunnan
Non State Actors and Local Authorities in Development is a European Union initiative that aims at strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations and local authorities as a pre-condition for a more equitable and open society through support to their “own initiatives”.
Project Overall Objectives
To reduce the health risks related to tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke for WCBA and children in contribution to MDG 4 in China.
Specific Objectives
To improve access to information on the health effects of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke among women and children and strengthen tobacco control policies and measures in Yunnan through the partnership of EU and Chinese NSAs.
Estimated Project Results
- Improved capacity of key stakeholders to prevent the initiation of tobacco use among youth and to reduce exposure to tobacco smoke among WCBA and children.
- Increased awareness of the adverse health consequences of tobacco consumption and exposure to tobacco smoke among WCBA and children.
- Strengthened legal protection of WCBA and children from tobacco consumption and tobacco smoke exposure.
- Raised technical profile of Chinese NSAs in the area of tobacco control and promote the dialogue and cooperation between EU and Chinese NSAs.
Main Programme Activities
- Awareness-raising and capacity-building; Workshops for maternal and children health workers, teachers, social workers and small business owners respectively. Support of tobacco control activities initiated by those who received this training.
- Organisation of seminars and study visits for legislators, officials and academia to promote policy and/or strategy change.
- Organisation of public awareness campaigns.
- Conduction of research on the enforcement of existing national and local tobacco control policies and measures to provide policy recommendations and disseminate research findings.
