Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission, visited EUBAM Libya’s Tripoli based premises on the 14th July 2018.

The High Representative and Vice President conducted a range of meetings on the situation in Libya. After the meeting with the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Siala, HRVP Mogherini sat down with Special Representative of the UN, Secretary-General Ghassan Salamé, and with representatives of UN agencies - IOM, UNHCR, UNDP, UNICEF - and some of the beneficiaries of EU financed projects carried out by the EU Delegation to Libya.

EUBAM Libya has spearheaded the EU presence in Libya, with Mogherini’s visit and the incoming diplomatic presence of the EU delegation to Libya, the EU dealings with the Government of National Accord, Libyan authorities and partner organizations including UNSMIL and the UN family will be strengthened.

During the meetings, HR/VP Mogherini discussed the EU’s support to the country and the most effective ways to further strengthen it. On top of its political support to Libya, the European Union is the main provider of assistance to improve the lives of Libyan citizens and help them to rebuild their country politically, socially and economically.

The visit crowned the preparation that EUBAM Libya has been working on during the last years. The Mission has, together with its Libyan counterparts, identified and prioritized, needs in the area of border management, criminal justice and law enforcement. The support of the HR/VP will aid the Mission’s project proposals as well as to unify the need to have EUBAM playing a pivotal role main streaming the EU funded projects in the future, and supporting the overall EU efforts and engagement with Libya. The Mission hopes that the high-level visit will sustain the EU Member States’ mandate revision of the Mission.
