May 3rd is celebrated every year as the World Press Freedom Day to emphasise the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

The European Union in Nigeria,  in collaboration with UNESCO and the Nigerian Union of Journalists, organised an event to mark the 2016 World Press Freedom Day with the theme "Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms: This is your right".

In his Keynote address, the Head of EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Michel ARRION emphasised the priority the EU accords to freedom of opinion and expression as an essential foundation for democracy, the rule of law, sustainable inclusive development and participation in public affairs, which are at the core of its values.
