Statement by the Spokesperson on the imminent execution of Mr Muhammad Kamaruzzaman in Bangladesh

09.04.2015
Text

After the confirmation by the Bangladeshi Supreme Court of the death sentence in the case of Mr. Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, the European Union reiterates its opposition to the use of capital punishment in all cases and under all circumstances. The EU has consistently called for its universal abolition.

Capital punishment is not a deterrent against crime and makes miscarriages of justice irreversible.

The European Union calls on Bangladeshi authorities to commute all death sentences and to introduce a moratorium on executions as a first step towards definitive abolition of capital punishment.
