At the invitation of the General Election Commission of Indonesia, the European Union established a mission to observe the general elections there on 5 April 2004.

hese elections were the biggest and most complex electoral event ever organised in one day, representing an important landmark in the consolidation of democracy in Indonesia. The mission was led by Chief Observer Glyn Ford (UK), member of the European Parliament.

In total, the EUEOM deployed 231 observers to all 32 Indonesian provinces. They met government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and the media.
