On September 21, the European Union and the African Union have signed the 15th contract for financial support to the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).

Text

The latest contract covers the period from January 1 to September 30, 2016, and provides funds amounting to EUR 178 million. EU funds are used to cover allowances for AMISOM troops and police, international and local civilian staff salaries, operational costs of the mission's offices and the Al Jazeera training camp.

Signature of this latest contract demonstrates the EU's continuing financial and political commitment to support  AMISOM, for which the EU already provided more than EUR 1 billion between the launch of the mission in 2007 and the end of 2015.

This support to AMISOM is an integral part of the EU's comprehensive and long term approach to support security and development efforts in Somalia.
