Strengthening Maritime Security: EUCAP Somalia and UNTMIS Deliver Advanced Coastal Navigation Training

EUCAP Somalia, in collaboration with the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), has successfully concluded a two-week intensive Coastal Navigation course, marking a key milestone in the ongoing development of Somalia’s maritime institutions.

The course brought together participants from the Somali Navy and Coast Guard (SNCG), the Somali Police Force – Department of Coast Guard (SPF-DCG), and the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport. It provided a strong foundation in both traditional and modern navigation methods. From interpreting nautical charts and calculating set and drift, to using classical instruments and solving real-world maritime challenges, participants gained essential practical and theoretical skills that support safe and effective maritime operations.

What makes this training particularly significant is not only the content, but also the broader context in which it was delivered. It represents a tangible example of the European Union’s integrated approach to maritime security in Somalia. EUCAP Somalia and UNTMIS have offered more than technical instruction—they have showcased how inter-agency collaboration and alignment of mandates can deliver sustainable and impactful outcomes.

For the Somali Navy and Coast Guard, the course strengthens operational preparedness; for the SPF-DCG, it enhances law enforcement capabilities at sea; and for the Ministry, it contributes to building a future cadre of SAR (Search and Rescue) Mission Coordinators and Maritime Administrators—roles that are critical to Somalia’s maritime security. This initiative has yielded benefits across multiple levels of Somalia’s maritime architecture. It has strengthened the operational preparedness of the Somali Navy and Coast Guard, while simultaneously reinforcing the maritime law enforcement capacity of the Somali Police Force – Department of Coast Guard. At the institutional level, the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport is now better positioned to cultivate the next generation of maritime professionals—individuals who will serve as Search and Rescue Mission Coordinators and Maritime Administrators.

This is not the end of a course, but the beginning of a renewed journey in professional excellence. Somalia’s maritime authorities are now well-equipped to lead, coordinate and protect the sea.
