Yemen: Statement by the Spokesperson on the release of detainees

The European Union welcomes the prisoner exchange operation in Yemen negotiated by UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg and facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross, which started today.

This initial release of 887 detainees by the parties, in line with the agreement reached in Geneva last month, is a crucial step in the implementation of the 2018 Stockholm Agreement. It brings hope to all remaining conflict-related detainees and their families. In this context, the EU also welcomes the parties’ commitment to continue negotiations on the Detainees’ Exchange Agreement.

In the holy month of Ramadan, the EU reiterates its calls for the extension of the truce, which could pave the way for a ceasefire and ultimately for a comprehensive and inclusive peace process under UN auspices. In that regard, the EU welcomes the regional initiatives of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman leading to de-escalation. The European Union continues to urge the Houthis to engage in good faith in line with the Council conclusions of 12 December 2022.
