US: High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken

High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington on Wednesday. They discussed ways to further strengthen the partnership between the EU and US at a crucial moment for global diplomacy. 

In their meeting, they covered the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine, Haiti and Venezuela, as well as other joint foreign and security priorities.   

High Representative Borrell stressed the need for more, faster and sustained military assistance to Ukraine. He commended the US for their latest decision on additional military aid and stressed that victory for Ukraine rested on the maintenance of our strong transatlantic bond. They also discussed efforts to promote a just and lasting peace, including global outreach initiatives such as Ukraine’s Peace Formula.

The High Representative recalled the EU’s commitment to long-term support for Ukraine, now totalling EUR 138 billion, with more to come, and informed his US counterpart about latest developments on Ukraine’s EU accession path.

High Representative Borrell and Secretary Blinken discussed the situation in Gaza. HR/VP Borrell, stressed the importance of reaching a durable ceasefire and the release of all hostages. He pointed to the urgent need for unhindered humanitarian access, first and foremost  through land-based crossings. He informed Secretary Blinken of the resumption of EU funding to UNRWA and they exchanged views on shared efforts to lay the groundwork for a durable peace in the Middle East through a two-state solution.

Both partners exchanged views on ongoing efforts to prevent regional escalation. They noted close EU-US cooperation to secure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

High Representative Borrell and Secretary Blinken also discussed the situation in Haiti and Venezuela and their strong will to support political processes aiming to restore stability and democratic reconciliation in both countries.
