From Ukraine: Giving birth during war

In the morning of 24 February, Yulia woke up to the sound of explosions.

Yulia was 8 months pregnant.

As Yulia could go into labour at any moment, she and her husband stayed in Kyiv and moved to a hotel near a maternity hospital.

She grabbed her stomach and went to the bathroom to breathe. 'You can't panic!' she told herself.

Soon after, the contractions began.

The hospital was close to a military base so they had to go to the maternity ward. Yulia gave birth under the siren sounds as an air raid alarm began.

15 minutes after her child was born, she moved to the dark, cold bomb shelter with other pregnant women, many in pain.

Yulia has reached Czechia with her husband and child, whose first year of life is shadowed by the war.

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 102,000 babies have been born in Ukraine.
