Syria: Statement by the Spokesperson on the passing of Bassma Kodmani

05.03.2023 EEAS Press Team

The European Union is deeply saddened by the passing of Bassma Kodmani early this week.

A central figure of the Syrian opposition, she was a powerful and tireless advocate for the role of women in a future Syria.

It is tragic that her vision – one which the EU shares – of a free and democratic Syria remains unfulfilled.

The EU conveys its condolences to Ms Kodmani’s family, and to the many who were close to her, and commends her efforts and her legacy.

In this context, the EU will continue to be involved to work for a sustainable solution to the Syrian conflict through a genuine, inclusive political transition in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254.
