Russia: Statement by the Spokesperson on the repressive police intimidation of representatives of Memorial

23.03.2023 EEAS Press Team

The EU expresses solidarity with the historical, educational, charitable and human rights society Memorial following the police raids and criminal cases unjustly made against its representatives earlier this week.

Memorial’s work in Russia has been invaluable in defence of human rights and against attempts to manipulate the historical memory of political repression in Russia in the 20th century.

The recent actions by the Russian authorities constitute yet another step in the ongoing intimidation and persecution of independent and critical voices in the Russian society. As the Russian co-laureates of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, Memorial plays a unique role for the Russian people and the whole of Europe.

The EU calls upon the Russian authorities to stop the unfounded prosecution and police harassment of Memorial and its staff – and to respect the rule of law, Russia’s own Constitution and its obligation under international law, including in the field of human rights.
