Pride

What does it mean?

LGBTIQ+ pride is the promotion of the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex persons and all other persons with diverse sexual orientations, gender identity or expressions, and sex characteristics as a social group. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that promotes most LGBTIQ+ rights movements.

Pride Month of June is dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual,  transgender. intersex and queer pride, observed in the Western world. Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969, and has since spread outside of the United States.

IDAHOBIT

What is it and what does LGBTIQ+ stand for?

The International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia aims to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex persons and all other persons with diverse sexual orientations, gender identity or expressions, and sex characteristics.

The EU stands Up for Human Rights of LGBTIQ+ persons. We are currently seeing a clear backlash against the human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, with sharp increases in hate speech and discrimination. The EU is a strong defender of human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons globally. Equality and non-discrimination are part of our core values, as emphasized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Treaties, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

In line with the EU’s motto “United in Diversity”, we emphasise that all are free and all are equal.
