Petition response - Letter from citizen urging the Suspension of EU-Israel Association Agreement
Dear Petitioner,
Thank you for your message of 13 December 2024 to High Representative Kaja Kallas.
The EU has been following with grave concern the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, and has regularly signalled these concerns to the government of Israel through various channels. The EU has warmly welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, and supports its implementation, including through the redeployment of the EU civilian mission EUBAM Rafah. The EU also welcomes the increase of aid entering Gaza since the ceasefire entered into force.
The EU keeps under constant review all agreements with third countries, and the principles and values upon which they are based. The EU has been consistently clear that political engagement and frank and open dialogue are the most effective way to convey EU concerns, including to our Israeli partners. The EU is not planning to suspend its cooperation with Israel, nor to impose economic sanctions against it. The Association Agreement with Israel is the legal basis of our ongoing dialogue with the Israeli authorities and it provides important mechanisms to discuss problematic issues and advance our point of view. In this framework, the EU will continue to reaffirm its commitment to the applicability of international human rights and humanitarian law in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The EU has spared no effort to work with partners to revive the political process towards the implementation of the two state solution. This remains our objective for the future.
