Moldova: HRVP Josep Borrell met with President Maia Sandu
EU High Representative/Vice President Josep Borrell met with the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu in Brussels today.
In the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its impact on the Republic of Moldova, High Representative Borrell underscored the European Union's solidarity with the Republic of Moldova. In particular he conveyed the EU’s appreciation to the people of Moldova for their solidarity in welcoming large numbers of people fleeing from Ukraine. The EU is already providing comprehensive support to address the immediate challenges of the refugee inflows, and has stepped up its medium-term support to strengthen Moldova’s overall resilience, in areas such as cyber security and disinformation.
High Representative Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s continued support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and with a special status for the Transnistrian region.
He expressed EU’s concerns about the recent incidents in the Transnistrian region and praised the restrained reactions from the authorities of the Republic of Moldova.
In the meeting with President Sandu High Representative Borrell also underlined the EU’s commitment to further deepen its relations with Moldova, acknowledging its European aspirations.
