Major General Gábor Horváth takes over as Deputy Director General and Chief of Staff EU Military Staff

The Deputy Director General (DDG) supports the Director General (DG) in his command responsibility, both as Deputy and Chief of Staff (COS).

His focus lies on EUMS in-house rules and procedures that ensure a coherent and reliable day-to-day approach and help promote the EUMS with its mission and tasks. The DDG leads all EUMS directorates and branches, maintaining close contact with the EUMC. He is involved in all discussions and evolving projects, giving his assessment, support and judgement, thus acting as an important liaison for the DG. He is the contact for EUMS staff and all staff-related matters. The DDG maintains close links with military and civilian interlocutors from a variety of organizations and the international community.

Major General Gábor Horváth, Deputy Director General and Chief of Staff EU Military Staff

 

The European Union Military Staff is delighted to announce the appointment of Major General Gábor Horváth, as its new Deputy Director General and Chief of Staff. Maj Gen Horváth brings a depth and range of experience to this appointment, not only as a result of his previous appointment as Director, Concepts and Capabilities, EU Military Staff, Brussels from 2009 to 2011, but also due to the fact that he served in Brussels in other appointments as outlined below:

  • HUN Military Representative to NATO MC and to EUMC, Brussels, Belgium.
  • Chief of Staff, ESDP Operation ALTHEA, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Head of the NATO Permanent Liaison Team to the EU Military Staff, Brussels.
  • HUN Deputy MILREP to the EU Military Committee, Brussels, Belgium.

Included in his impressive array of assignments, he served as Director of Training Directorate HDF Command, Acting Deputy JFC CDR, Commander, 25th Infantry Brigade, Tata, Hungary and Commandant, HDF Non-commissioned Officers Academy in Szentendre, Hungary.

He is a graduate of the Joint Defence College, Paris, but has completed several military and leadership courses, not only within the HDF, but also in the NATO School Oberammergau, the NATO Defence College, and the Centre for Higher Defence Studies, both in Rome. He also completed the ESDC High Level Course.

Amongst his many Decorations, Maj Gen Horváth was awarded the Knight’s Cross, Order of Merit of (Hungary) in 2015, the Knight of the French Ordre National du Merit in 2016 and the Military Recognition Medal (Militär-Anerkennungsmedaille) of the Federal Republic of Austria (2019).

Maj Gen Horváth, a Mechanised Infantry Army Officer entered the Hungarian Defence Forces in  1982 as an Officer Cadet. He was promoted 1st lieutenant in 1986, and served in Command and Staff appointments throughout his career. He was promoted to the rank of Maj Gen in 2020. He is fluent in English and French and speaks passable Russian. He is married to Erika and they have two children. Their son and daughter are both  Officers in the Hungarian Defence Forces.

Maj Gen Horváth replaces Lt Gen Giovanni Manione, who retires, not only with the EUMS but also from military service. We wish both Officers continued success.
