Iran: Statement by the Spokesperson on the situation of Narges Mohammadi

The European Union is deeply alarmed by reports of the serious health condition of human rights defender and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who is currently in detention in Iran.

We urge Iranian authorities to immediately take all necessary measures so that Narges Mohammadi is finally and urgently granted adequate medical care. We recall that charges against Narges Mohammadi are based solely on her legitimate and peaceful advocacy for human rights, and we continue to call for her immediate and unconditional release. 

We also call on Iranian authorities to release all those unjustly arrested in the rightful exercise of their freedom of expression, including during the recent protests, and to uphold Iran’s obligations under international law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party.
