Iran: Statement by the Spokesperson on the sentencing of Narges Mohammadi

22.06.2024 EEAS Press Team

Iranian human rights defender and Nobel peace prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been recently sentenced to one additional year in prison.

Narges Mohammadi, is already jailed in Iran and is serving multiple sentences amounting to more than 10 years of imprisonment. She bravely continues to use her voice to protect human dignity and the rights of Iranians. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”.

Fundamental rights such as freedom of expression must always be respected. The European Union calls on Iran to release Ms Mohammadi, taking also into account her health condition.

The European Union will continue to advocate for the respect of human rights in Iran and elsewhere and for the freedom of all of those who are - like herself - unjustly detained.
