Harnessing the Resilience of Syrian Refugees for Peacebuilding, in Alignment with UNSCR 2254

25.05.2024

Organiser: the Arab Organization for Human Rights in North Europa

This event aims to explore how the resilience of Syrian refugees can be harnessed to contribute meaningfully to the political solution and peacebuilding efforts in Syria, in line with the objectives outlined in UNSCR 2254. The concept revolves around three key components:

  1. Challenges and Risks:

Syrian refugees face a myriad of challenges and risks in neighbouring countries. Economic struggles, lack of access to basic services, and discrimination are pervasive. Legal barriers often prevent them from securing employment or accessing education. Additionally, the instability in host countries, such as political unrest or conflict, exacerbates their vulnerability. Social integration poses another hurdle, as cultural differences and language barriers hinder their ability to assimilate. Moreover, the looming threat of deportation or return to Syria looms large, adding to their uncertainty and insecurity.

  1. Resilience and Potentiality:

Syrian refugees have exhibited resilience in the face of adversity, often overcoming language barriers, cultural differences, and economic challenges to rebuild their lives. By empowering refugees through education, skills training, and employment opportunities, they can become agents of change within their communities. Programs focusing on language acquisition, vocational training, entrepreneurship, and job placement can enhance their self-reliance and enable them to contribute positively to their host societies and potentially to the reconstruction and development efforts in Syria.

    3. Advocacy and Diplomacy:

Syrian refugees can serve as powerful advocates for peace and stability in their homeland. By sharing their stories, raising awareness about the root causes of the conflict, and advocating for inclusive political solutions, they can amplify the voices of those affected by the crisis and mobilize support for peaceful resolution efforts. Engaging with policymakers, civil society organizations, and international stakeholders can facilitate the inclusion of refugee perspectives in decision-making processes and enhance diplomatic efforts to advance the objectives of UNSCR 2254.

Harnessing the resilience of Syrian refugees presents a unique opportunity to promote peacebuilding efforts in Syria in alignment with UNSCR 2254. By empowering refugees, fostering inter-community dialogue, and advocating for inclusive political solutions, they can contribute to building sustainable peace and reconciliation in their homeland while enriching the societies that have welcomed them. This concept note calls for collaborative action involving governments, international organizations, civil society, and refugee communities to realize the full potential of Syrian refugees as catalysts for peace in the region.
