Haiti: Statement by the Spokesperson on the establishment of a Transitional Presidential Council

15.04.2024 EEAS Press Team

Following the publication of the official decree setting out the procedure for the establishment of a Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) in Haiti, it is now crucial that the TPC is formally appointed without further delay by the outgoing government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. This will also allow the appointment of a new Prime Minister by the TPC.

The country urgently needs a Haitian-led solution to end the current political vacuum, and to address the long-running political, security and humanitarian crisis. We call on all Haitian political forces to cooperate earnestly towards this objective.

The appointment of the TPC is also needed to open the way for the deployment of a Multinational Security Support Mission, as mandated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2699, to strengthen the efforts of the Haitian National Police in its fight against the gangs, restore the rule of law and the basic security conditions in the country, and ultimately pave the way for the holding of free and fair elections.
