The evolution of EU policy on Syria and its current challenges

11.03.2021

This event is intended to provide a critical discussion of the past and possible future evolution of EU policy regarding the Syrian conflict.

It will consider whether the EU should adjust its policy to the present state of the conflict, and if so – in what directions? Speakers will include:

  • Carl Hallergard, European External Action Service
  • Joseph Daher, European University Institute
  • Rajaa Altalli, Center for Civil Society and Democracy
  • Erwin van Veen, Clingendael Institute

Speakers will discuss the following:

  • What have been the effects of focusing on humanitarian support while outsourcing negotiations to the UN and, in the case of EU Member States, not engaging militarily?
  • How useful are sanctions at this point in time?
  • For how long is EU policy on refugees actually sustainable?
  • Is it time for a shift away from the so-far immutable demand for ‘a political transition’? If so, how can this be accomplished?
