EU Military Committee Chair General Seán Clancy, Meets Spanish Defence Minister to Strengthen European Security Cooperation
Madrid, 16 June 2026 – The Chair of the European Union Military Committee (CEUMC) General Seán Clancy, held a high-level meeting with Margarita Robles, Spanish Minister of Defence, to discuss Spain’s pivotal contributions to European security and defence. The meeting underscored the strong partnership between Spain and the EU in addressing shared security challenges.
During the discussions, Minister Robles highlighted Spain’s leading role in key defence initiatives, including:
Operation Atalanta, Support to Ukraine funding and defence equipment, and Training missions, such as the Toledo Training Centre, which has become a critical hub for Ukrainian forces’ preparation.
The meeting also focused on Spain’s defence industrial capabilities, driving innovation in naval, aerospace, and cybersecurity sectors. CEUMC commended Spain’s operational excellence and commitment to multinational cooperation, stating: "Spain’s contributions—from rapid deployment capabilities to defence industrial collaboration—are essential to European security." Maritime security challenges, particularly in the Mediterranean and Strait of Hormuz.
Regional stability efforts, including Spain’s engagement in the Sahel and Lebanon.
Future EU-NATO collaboration, with an emphasis on enhanced interoperability and joint exercises.
