EU-Japan: First Security and Defence Dialogue at Managing Director / Director General Level takes place in Brussels
On 11 June, the European Union and Japan held their 1st Security and Defence Dialogue at Managing Director/Director-General level in Brussels.
During the Dialogue, the EU and Japan agreed to further cooperate and coordinate on maritime security, space security, Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference, disarmament and non-proliferation as well as Women, Peace and Security issues. They also exchanged on defence initiatives and defence industry policies.
The Dialogue was co-chaired by Benedikta von Seherr-Thoss, Managing Director for Peace, Security and Defence, European External Action Service, and Shuji Yuge, Director-General for International Affairs, Ministry of Defense, and Seiichiro Taguchi, Deputy Director-General and Ambassador, European Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. Major General Gabor Horvath, Deputy Director General/Chief of the European Union’s Military Staff also attended for the EU side.
Background
As part of the EU-Japan Security and Defence Partnership in November 2024, the EU and Japan have upgraded their Dialogue to the level of Managing Director. Given the increasing interlinks between Europe and the Indo-Pacific’s security, this new framework will bolster cooperation across all security and defence domains.
