EEAS: High Representative Josep Borrell announces senior nominations

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission announced today the following appointments for senior positions in the European External Action Service (EEAS):

  • Niclas KVARNSTRÖM as Managing Director for Asia and Pacific. Mr. Kvarnström was previously Head of Department for Asia, The Pacific and Latin America at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He has also previously served as Ambassador of Sweden to Singapore and Brunei. Mr. Kvarnström took up his duties on 1 November 2023.
  • Stella RONNER GRUBAČIĆ as Deputy Managing Director for Values and Multilateral Relations. In addition to her new post, she will retain her previous responsibility as Ambassador for Gender and Diversity, and will be thus double hatted. Ms. RONNER GRUBAČIĆ has covered Ambassadorial posts for the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Croatia, Romania and the Hellenic Republic. She took up her duties 1 November 2023.
  • Rosamaria GILI as Deputy Managing Director for Middle East and North Africa. Ms. GILI was previously Head of the EEAS Division for Maghreb. Ms. GILI was formerly the Head of the EEAS division for Arabian Peninsula and Regional Organisations. She took up her duties 16 October 2023.

The High Representative of the Union has today also announced the nomination of an Ambassador of the European Union.

  • Silvio GONZATO has been nominated as EU Ambassador to Albania. Mr. GONZATO has formerly served as Deputy Ambassador of the EU Delegation to the United Nations in New York. He has served previously as Director for interinstitutional relations, policy coordination and public diplomacy in the EEAS.

Mr. Gonzato will be formally appointed on the 1 December 2023.
