Colombia: Statement by the Spokesperson following the death of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay

The European Union expresses its deepest condolences and solidarity to the family and loved ones of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay and to the people of Colombia.

It is important that Colombian authorities continue their efforts to swiftly identify and bring to justice the instigators and all those responsible for the attack of 7 June, which caused the death of Senator Uribe, and strengthen the protection of all political candidates and public figures.

We also call on all political and public actors in the country to reject political polarisation and hate speech, including by subscribing to the initiative of the Ombudswoman's Office (Defensoría del Pueblo).

The European Union reaffirms its commitment to supporting Colombia in the pursuit of peace, the fight against organised crime and the protection of democracy against political violence.
