Burkina Faso: statement by High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell on the elections
The presidential and parliamentary elections in Burkina Faso constitute an important step in the consolidation of democracy in this country. The elections mark the end of an electoral process that has been characterised by consensus and civic-mindedness on the part of all involved.
The EU supports the efforts made at national and international level to maintain this consensus, including the action taken by ECOWAS, the African Union, the International Organisation of La Francophonie and the United Nations.
It is important that the next steps in the electoral process are consistent with the principles of transparency, respect for the rule of law and inclusivity – essential elements in ensuring that the election results are credible and accepted by all.
Pending the final results, which will be declared by the Constitutional Council, any challenge to the provisional results should be made through the existing legal channels.
