Building on Solid Foundations in Ghana
At a local level, the EU Security and Defence Initiative Gulf of Guinea (EUSDI GoG) supported training activities continue to demonstrate clear value. A recent field visit of the Project & Coordination Cell (PCC) of the military pillar of EUSDI GoG confirmed this and, together with their Ghanaian counterparts, founds ways to improve even better.
A Partnership Delivering Results
EUSDI GoG engagement in Ghana’s security sector is already yielding encouraging outcomes. Training programmes have reached a solid level of quality and relevance, contributing to improved operational readiness across land, maritime, and air domains. Collaboration with Ghanaian institutions is constructive and forward-looking, with local counterparts actively shaping priorities and expressing strong ownership.
The integrated approach promoted by the EU, linking operational training, strategic advice, and institutional support, is increasingly visible on the ground. Coordination with Member States and international partners has also improved, reinforcing the collective European footprint and reducing duplication of efforts.
Responding to Evolving Needs
At the same time, the Ghanaian context continues to evolve. While stability remains strong, emerging threats, particularly in northern regions, underline the importance of sustained vigilance and targeted support. There is a clear demand for strengthening key capabilities and local stakeholders have also emphasised the importance of long-term investments in line with broader EU objectives in the region, notably resilience-building and preventive security.
Making Good Cooperation Even Better
The overall assessment is clear: EUSDI GoG is delivering, and delivering well. Yet, as the saying goes, one does not have to be unwell to improve. The current momentum offers an opportunity to consolidate gains and elevate the partnership further. Maintaining strong links and mutual trust is essential and this visit confirmed that.
A Strategic Opportunity
Continued high-level engagement and field presence remain essential to sustaining progress. Regular interaction with Ghanaian counterparts and European stakeholders not only reinforces mutual trust but also ensures that EU support remains responsive and aligned with realities on the ground.
In this context, ongoing engagement should be seen not as a corrective measure, but as a strategic investment in a partnership that is already functioning effectively and has the potential to achieve even greater results.
The trajectory is positive. With targeted adjustments and sustained commitment, EUSDI GoG actions in Ghana can continue to serve as a model for effective, locally anchored cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea.
