About the Ambassador

Ambassador Nicolás Berlanga-Martinez officially presented his credentials to the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo H.E. Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo on 11 January 2024. The DRC is not the first step in its African experience. Mr Berlanga, who is a Spanish citizen, has previously held the post of Ambassador of the European Union in Togo and Somalia. He had also worked as Senior Adviser on Migration in the Africa Department of the European External Action Service and Senior EU Coordinator for Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea.

I am very pleased to welcome you to the website of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Many of you are certainly wondering about the place the EU and it’s role in the world and, specifically in the DRC. This site, which aims to be a toolkit, is here to answer your questions. It gives a range of information about who we are, what we do and our partnership with the DRC. It is also a gateway to Europe.

A study carried out in 2024 indicates that three quarters of Congolese surveyed want the EU to increase its level of engagement in the DRC. This is proof that we have built together a dynamic partnership more than 60 years ago, the results of which have influenced the lives of millions of Congolese in social sectors as health and education.

Through this website, we illustrate the relationship between the DRC and the EU based on trust, solidarity, openness and mutual respect. We commit to continue this partnership, together with young people and all our partners, working to create an environment conducive to peace, democracy, social justice and environmental protection.

All these challenges require an inclusive dialogue with authorities, the private sector and civil society and a concerted approach with international partners and Team Europe with our Member States. The partnership dialogue called for by the Samoa Agreement, which succeeds the Cotonou Agreement, defines the contours of a renewed partnership from continent to continent in order to establish an area of common prosperity that takes account, in particular, of political and security, economic and trade issues, the green and digital transitions and employment.
