The European Union, together with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration, will co-host the International solidarity conference on the Venezuelan refugee and migrant crisis on 28-29 October in Brussels.
It is estimated that, so far, 4.3 million Venezuelans have fled as a result of the political turmoil, socio-economic instability and humanitarian crisis in their country.
“Hurricane Dorian has left a large trail of destruction with many casualties and leaving homes in ruins. We will do all we can to help, getting aid in to the people on the ground. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy and with the Bahamian authorities and brave first responders on the scene,” said Christos Stylianides, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management.
At a time when human rights are challenged on a daily basis with many attempts to undermine the universality and indivisibility of human rights, the EU has remained at the forefront of the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy, be it in international forums, bilaterally with governments or through concrete support to the civil society.
