First EU-GCC Ambassadorial Dialogue in Geneva

On 5 May, Representatives of the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) met for the first Ambassadorial Dialogue in Geneva. Permanent Representatives of all EU and GCC states joined the discussion.

The meeting built on the positive outcomes of the first GCC-EU Summit, held in Brussels on 16 October 2024 under the title "A Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity," and the 29th Joint Council and Ministerial Meeting held on 6 October 2025.

Topics discussed included: Implications of Iran’s attacks against GCC States on the region and worldwide, the Global IHL initiative and the humanitarian reset, how to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the multilateral system (UN80 initiative) and the Global Health Architecture.

“In an increasingly unpredictable world, working closely with our partners across the globe is essential. We are therefore very pleased to host this first Ambassadorial dialogue between our two groups here in Geneva,” says EU Ambassador Deike Potzel, noting that the joint statement after the first EU – GCC summit in 2024 mentioned supporting “UN efforts in helping shape a multilateral system designed to deliver more fairly and effectively for all.”

“The convening of the first dialogue between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union at the ambassadors' level in Geneva reflects the depth of relations between the two groups, and expands the areas of coordination and cooperation between them,” stated the GCC on X after the meeting.
