European Union in Sudan Human Rights Prize 2025

The Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) are grassroots, voluntary, community-led initiatives that emerged in Sudan in response to the country humanitarian crises. Rooted in the Sudanese tradition of "Nafeer," which emphasizes collective action, ERRs have become pivotal in providing essential humanitarian assistance amid conflict and instability.
ERRs are a voluntary network of medical professionals, engineers and others specialists who are providing humanitarian assistance to over four million people. They offer:
- food, clean water, and medication;
- community kitchens and health clinics; and
- trauma counselling and support for victims of sexual violence.
The EU Human Rights Prize recognises the invaluable contribution of the Emergency Response Rooms to safeguarding the right to life, the right to food, the ight to health, the right to protection and many more human rights to civilians affected by the war in Sudan.
By providing humanitarian aid on a voluntary basis, the Emergency Response Rooms are also maintaining the Sudanese tradition of social cohesion at local level.
The EU in Sudan and its Member States reiterate their joint commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights and their rejection of war as a means to settle disputes. The EU in Sudan and its Member States recall that the war in Sudan has claimed the life of thousands of civilians and the forced displacement of more than 12 million Sudanese.
