The European Union Delegation to South Sudan and senior government officials joined the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on Thursday to mark World Refugee Day (WRD) at Jamjang camp in Ruweng Administrative Area.

In a country where most, if not all, including the President, have experienced forced displacement in their lifetime, WRD has special significance. To highlight the importance of this day, the EU delegation, together with UNHCR, hosted a reception for High Commissioner Filippo Grandi and two ministers, which included a photo exhibition; organised radio talk shows on EU activities and the wider significance of WRD, and participated in a joint field visit with Mr. Grandi to JamJang Camp.

On his fifth visit to South Sudan, Mr Grandi wanted to assess the impact of the Sudan crisis in order to assess needs and better advocate for a solution to the situation. His delegation to JamJang included South Sudan's Minister of Interior Angelina Teny, UN Resident Coordinator Anita Kiki Gbeho, and EU representatives Lothar Jaschke and Adela Rodriquez.

While in JamJang camp, Grandi's delegation talked to refugees in groups, visited an exhibition of camp products (agriculture & textiles) and commemorated the WRD with thousands of refugees. The refugee representative asked the WFP not to stop distributing food and called for more school classes, more and better-equipped police stations and more roads.

In her message, Minister Teny highlighted the Juba government's open door policy for refugees and the contribution of communities in providing land for refugees. South Sudan hosts 465, 000 refugees in 19 camps across the country.
